Buddhist monks who do compassion meditation have been shown to modulate their amygdala, along with their temporoparietal junction and insula, during their practice. The blending of a community of neuroscientists, Eastern and Western people that meditate, and Buddhist scholars is forming the new field of Contemplative Science. This emerging area of research applies the scientific method and advanced neuroimaging techniques in combination with various meditation traditions.
